A SECOND World War veteran who has carried a Royal British Legion standard at remembrance services for 30 years has been ordered to stop because she’s too old.
Officials told ex-RAF cook Madge Covey, 87, to return the eight- foot staff to Wellington And District Branch HQ in Somerset next week as she’d passed the national insurable age of 85. But Mrs Covey says she’ll leave it outside her door. “I’ve shed tears, now I’m angry,” she said.

THERE HAS been much discussion on the European health care system. Here is some information on how health care works in Germany in 2009.
Approximately 85 percent of the population in Germany are mandatory or voluntary members of the state health insurance providers (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung or GKV). It is illegal to be uninsured. Others usually have private health insurance. Everyone living in Germany is required to be insured for at least hospital and outpatient medical treatment.
There are approximately 200 Krankenkassen in Germany, which are nonprofit associations administrating the government health scheme. Some have millions of members. All health insurance funds must stick to the government regulations on the minimum they offer.
The costs of the German health care system are immense and rising due to demographics as well as long-term unemployment rates. The latest major change is the introduction of the Gesundheitsfonds, which is a huge collection and distribution fund for all moneys paid into the GKV as of Jan

As an MFi (Made for iPod/iPhone) accessory attaching to the bottom connector of the iPhone, the iCarte turns the iPhone into an NFC phone as well as an RFID Reader/Writer. Business users can use the iPhone and iCarte for commercial applications such as asset tracking, document tracking, healthcare, security and access control.
“We are excited about the introduction of NFC, RFID and contactless payment solutions for this (iPhone) game-changing smartphone platform with millions of users,” said Ambrose Tam, Chief Executive Officer of Wireless Dynamics. “We anticipate that there will be many mobile payment and e-Commerce applications to be developed for the iPhone and iCarte to speed up the adoption of NFC and RFID.”

BigDeal.com, a new auction website, has opened its “virtual doors.”
BigDeal.com provides a shopping experience in which it said shoppers get the chance to win up to 90 percent discounts on new, brand name consumer items, without any risk of losing money.
“Winners of auctions at BigDeal.com will get very deep discounts on popular, brand new items,” said Nicolas Darveau-Garneau, BigDeal.com’s CEO. “What differentiates BigDeal.com from other auction sites is that everyone is a winner. That’s because bidders at BigDeal.com always retain the value of their bid investments and never lose money. That’s why we call it a Guaranteed Auction.”
BigDeal.com explained that the bidder who wins an auction will often get 65 percent to 90 percent off retail price on new, factory- sealed items while bidders who don’t win get a 100 percent refund of their bid fees toward the purchase of the auction item. In addition, all bidders get $1 in “Loyalty Bucks” for every $1 of bids they purchase, which they can redeem for a discount on a gift card from participating retailers

SOMEWHERE between the reports that Pap smears and tests for prostate cancer aren’t all they were cracked up to be, and the news that a high fiber diet doesn’t do anything to prevent cancer, the health establishment began looking decidedly nonomniscient. Then this week, a federal task force reported that most women don’t need annual mammograms.
Even more fascinating, they suggested that doctors stop telling their female patients to self-examine their breasts for lumps.
If you happen to be a woman, particularly a somewhat obsessive woman, this is huge news. The to-do list just got one item shorter.
The task report said that the jury is still out on whether doctors should do the examinations themselves, but my general impression is that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force feels that younger women should not let anybody near their breasts unless the plan is to have sex.
The report triggered two immediate and inevitable responses. Doctors and patients began an animated discussion

Panopto, a provider of media presentation capture solutions for the corporate, education, government and healthcare markets, announced that Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast, the Fort Wayne, Ind., region of the Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana system, is deploying CourseCast across its campus to provide students with multiple chances to review and learn material.
“Traditionally in the education arena, students have one chance to learn critical course material. They go to a lecture, take notes and move on, even if they do not fully understand the information,” said Andaz Ahmad, director of instructional technology who manages Instructional Technology, Distance Education for faculty/staff and Media Services, for Ivy Tech-Northeast. “With Panopto, students now have multiple chances to really master course objectives. They can revisit lectures at their convenience, zero in on segments of interest, and watch classes they may have missed due to an illness or other obligation.”
The company reported that Ivy Tech-Northeast selected Panopto CourseCast as its lecture capture solution based on its ability to capture all facets of a lecture, including video, audio and PowerPoint slides

FURTHER price rises are on the way for Avis Europe customers, the car hire giant signalled yesterday.
The company has kept a “very tight” rein on fleet costs in the face of lower demand and pushed up prices for individuals and businesses.
The Berkshire-based firm said it “continued to seek opportunities” to push up prices and has more rises on the way for individual customers in 2010.
Avis is also in talks over raising rates with contracted customers such as businesses and insurers who offer replacement car services.

Being an organ donor means you agree to allow your healthy organs and tissues to be donated upon your death to others who need transplants.
In most cases, you can fill out an organ donor card or simply sign the back of your driver’s license to make your wishes known, says the National Women’s Health Information Center.
Anyone under age 18 must have the consent of a parent or guardian to become a donor, notes the center.
Organs and tissues that may be donated include bone marrow, bones, kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestines and skin.
Being an organ donor will not affect in any way the medical care that may be used to save your life in an emergency, the center says.
